A CFML engine is a piece of software which understands the CFML language.
CFML started life in 1995 as the language of the proprietary ColdFusion application server, but (since CFML is so great), there have been several alternative engines created (most of which never got anywhere).
These days, there are two succesful alternatives - Open BlueDragon and Railo - both Open Source and pretty much compatible with Adobe ColdFusion, whilst also each providing unique benefits and helping to innovate CFML in general.
